Here we are, the summer has quickly passed, and we are celebrating Labor Day, an extra day off for many. Not me. It’s a time both to reflect and look forward. We have finished our summer sermon series on lesser-known people from the Old Testament and are returning mostly to lectionary preaching. The scripture about Tamar was an eye opener for many.

As the days grow regretfully shorter and the air turns crisp, we find ourselves entering a new season—one filled with color, harvest, and fresh beginnings. So beautiful in our state of Pennsylvania. Fall has a way of reminding us of God’s faithfulness: just as the earth cycles through seasons, so too does our spiritual life, with times of planting, growing, resting, and renewal. Together, let us step into a season of gratitude, service, and community. Whether you are returning from summer travels, beginning a new school year, or simply turning the page into September, know that you are deeply welcome here.

Community activities start immediately. We will have a table at Heritage fest, Saturday, September 6, from 10-3, offering information about our church and providing low-cost sweets. Stop by and say hello. On Saturday, October 4th from 1-3, the Orwigsburg Library is holding a Book Bingo in our fellowship hall. Free to all, come play and win books.

On Sunday, October 12, we will be hosting a program and reception to thank donors to our SOS campaign. Jennifer Bowen, President of the Orwigsburg Historical Society will be our guest speaker. Special music will be provided by The Mark P. Thomas Ensemble from the Schuylkill Choral Society. Zion’s Red Church is amazingly grateful to our community who see our steeple as a beacon in our community and found it worthwhile contributing to its renovation. Finally finished a couple weeks ago, the steeple looks beautiful and is strong.

The Community Thanksgiving Service will be held on Tuesday, November 25th at 7 pm at Zion’s Red church, including churches in the local area. Fellowship will follow with pumpkin pie and coffee. The event will herald the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026 and as this church is the oldest in Schuylkill County, this service will feature elements from its early history. I will again be holding an Advent Bible Study in our community. Stay tuned for details on Facebook and our webpage.

We have much to look forward to: worship rooted in the Gospel, opportunities for study and fellowship, and ways to serve our neighbors in love. Let us enter this season with open hearts, ready to be surprised by grace and strengthened in hope.

May God bless each of you with peace, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose as we journey together into autumn.
Blessings in the name of Christ,
Pastor Jan
